Shortlist 2004

The following books, listed in alphabetical order, are in contention for the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour and the TD CANADA TRUST Cash Award. Announcement of the winning book will be made on National Book Day  at a Luncheon to be held at the Stephen Leacock Home.

The five short-listed authors are:

Michel Basilières - Black Bird - published by Alfred A Knopf Canada.
George Bowering - Stone Country - published by Peguin Books
Ian Ferguson - Village of the Small Houses - published by Douglas & McIntyre Ltd.
Stuart McLean - Vinyl Café Diaries - published by Viking Canada
Patricia Pearson - Playing House - published by Random House Canada

Michel Basilières   (Black Bird)

Michel Basilieres grew up in Montreal with his French father and Anglophone mother. He now lives in Toronto, where he is writing his second novel.

George Bowering (Stone Country)

George Bowering is a major figure in Canadian Literature, having published poetry, literary criticism and other prose. He has won Governor General’s Awards for both poetry and fiction. Bowering, who lives in Vancouver, is Canada’s first poet laureate.

Ian Ferguson (Village of Small Houses)

Ian Ferguson is an award-winning playwright and humourist. Currently living in Los Angeles and developing a television series, he was previously shortlisted with his brother Will for the Leacock Award for the best-seller How to Be a Canadian.

Stuart McLean (Vinyl Café Diaries)

Stuart McLean is one of Canada’s most popular broadcast personalities and the host   of the “Vinyl Café” on CBC Radio; he is a two time winner of the Leacock Award, and a professor of broadcast journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto.

Patricia Pearson (Playing House)

Patricia Pearson has written award-winning nonfiction and commentary. Playing House is her first novel
