The Leacock Association is pleased to
announce that Will Ferguson is this year’s recipient of the Leacock
Medal for Humour for his novel, Beauty
Tips From Moose Jaw, published by Random House.
In addition to the medal, Ferguson will also receive a $10,000 prize
generously sponsored by TD Bank Financial Group.
Will Ferguson is no stranger to the Leacock
Medal for Humour. He won
the medal in 2002 for his novel Happiness
(which was originally titled Generica).
He actually made the shortlist twice that year.
He was also nominated for a book he co-wrote with his brother Ian,
called How to Be a Canadian.
Ferguson is the author of 10 books.
The first, Why I Hate Canadians, was written in 1997.
Since then, he has won numerous honours and awards, as well as
critical acclaim for his writing. He has been called “The funniest writer in Canada” by the
National Post. The Vancouver
Province says Ferguson is “Eminently readable and entertaining.”
The Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour is
Canada’s premier award for humour in Canadian Literature.
It was established in 1946, two years after the death of Stephen
Leacock, by the Leacock Associates. Close
friends, colleagues and supporters of Stephen Leacock were the original
members of the Leacock Associates (originally the Stephen Leacock Memorial
Committee) when it was formed in 1946 under the guidance of Packet Editor,
C. H. Hale. Membership was
Orillia-based, but quickly spread through North America and England. |
